Mustangs stay Undefeated

Reviews with Rob | Westfield and Dekaney

In a 6A Region II District 14 matchup. Westfield went undefeated for the first round of district play. The Mustangs looked to stay that way against a scrappy Dekaney team, looking to hold on to its playoff chances. Being separated by only 2.6 miles, I knew going into the game that this would be a rocking and electric atmosphere. I wasn’t disappointed; the crowd was energized from the JV game to the end of the varsity game. Westfield came out early and set the tone with multiple inside baskets scored by ℅ 2025 P Jeremiah Cooper. He was dominant in the first half with 15 points and 8 rebounds. It didn’t look like Dekaney had any answer for him. Unsigned senior G DeBrion Broomfield showed why he can help a college team, because even without scoring he was controlling the pace of the game while also playing tenacious defense. Unsigned senior W Markie Grant was one of the lone bright spots for Dekaney in the first half, as he finished with 5 points and multiple hustle plays. Nevertheless, the Wildcats would go into halftime losing by a score of 38-13.

Dekaney came out of the locker room, determined to take away Cooper and any paint scoring that was going on for Westfield. That’s when the Mustangs started to bomb away from the three-point line. ℅ 2025 W Kameron Lewis put himself on my radar as one of the best shooters in the city. He went 4-7 from the three-point line and totally opened the game up. Dekaney fought valiantly. Unsigned senior P Xavier Phipps showed tremendous heart and determination, garnering 11 points and 3 rebounds in the second half. Unsigned senior G Kenjuan Hampton also played tough. He scored 8 points in the second half and had a highlight dunk. Unfortunately for Dekaney, it was too much Mustangs on this night, as Westfield would prevail 68-44 to keep their quest for an undefeated district season alive.

Westfield was led by: Jeremiah Cooper with 21 points, and 12 rebounds; DeBrion Broomfield with 15 points, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds; Kameron Lewis with 14 points, and 5 rebounds

Dekaney was led by: Xavier Phipps with 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals; Kenjuan Hampton with 10 points; Markie Grant with 9 points, and 8 rebounds
