We Want 1st Place!
South Houston claims 1st place in round one of district play. SoHo and I’m not talking about Manhattan, NY, or Westminster, London. South Houston, Texas probably has the best parent section I’ve seen this year. They do all the antics like a team bench would do on made shots, blocked shots, crossovers, and anytime a big play is made. You can tell that the players are an extension of them with their demeanor as well as their coach with their confidence on the floor.
Both teams came out aggressive on the defensive side of the ball. The game started with fouls sending both teams to the charity stripe on each of their possessions and the game was 2-2. You could feel the energy from the stands oozing onto the court in this game. Shortly after both teams exchanged buckets South Houston's defensive pressure forced turnovers and capitalized off of each one giving them a nice little Cushing early off in the game. The Trojans would end the first quarter up by 9 points. The Trojans continued with their half-court defensive pressure which kept causing turnover after turnover and they would stretch out the lead. It didn’t matter anytime the Mavericks would score the Trojans would answer back with a bucket of their own. The Trojans of South Houston went into the half up 33-18. The Mavericks would make a push in the third quarter of the game. Slowly chipping away and would eventually get the game back within a single-digit deficit as the quarter closed out with South Houston still up by 8 points. Despite their efforts, the Mavericks weren't able to get the lead any lower than that 8-point deficit. South Houston was hitting big trey balls in the fourth quarter and was able to hold the lead and walk away with the win over Pasadena Memorial in their first matchup of the district play.
Jordan Buckner 6’0” | South Houston | 2025. I have yet to witness this lead guard not show up in a meaningful game. He gets buckets as well as dishes out assists. He had opponents twisting and turning around. He is also very vocal on the floor. He finished the game with 18 points and 5 assists in the win.
Josh Larry 6’1” | South Houston | 2024. JuCo coaches look no further! Josh has the frame, the speed, the toughness, is a good secondary shooter, and his competitiveness is second nature. Has the wingspan and quickness laterally to guard any guard on the floor. Finished the game with 17 points and was a pickpocket as he came away with 3 steals and multiple deflections.
Xavier Muhhamad 6’5” | South Houston | 2027. This freshman has been very impactful all season long. With just 28 Varsity games under his belt, and it’s still seven more games left in the regular season. He has set the school record for most rebounds in a season. He did an amazing job battling against an NCAA D1 signee and never backed down. Bright future ahead for this young prospect. He finished the game with 11 points and pulled down 16 rebounds.
Robert Miller III 6’10” | Pasadena Memorial | 2024. The Louisiana State University “LSU” started the game with a dunk to get things going. He showed us why he is a defensive prowess as a shot blocker, and why he leads the state of Texas in blocked shots per game. He also was altering his opponent's shot attempts. He made good passes out of the post with his back to the basket. He finished the game with 10 points, 9 rebounds, 6 blocks and 3 assists.
Chris Jones Jr. 6’2” | Pasadena Memorial | 2025. Chris is a perimeter threat. He is also the leading scorer for the Mavericks on the season. It was tough for him to get clean looks, but when he did he hit his shots. He did most of his scoring in the second half of the game. He finished the game with 14 points.
